(self)serving, critiques contemporary excess through a ritualistic engagement between the artist and a table, bread sculptures, and the audience. Over 20 minutes, the performance delves into the themes of vanity and individual consumption, set against a meticulously deliberate pace. Drawing parallels with the political context of the Bread Riots of 1977 in Egypt, to deepen the critique on governmental policies and societal reactions to scarcity. The performance features sound design by Abdelrahman Hassanin and Assi Abogado.
(self)serving is commissioned and curated by Marwan Ali and Nour Elbery and is part of (un)cooked, a group exhibition for Jameel Arts Centre’s Youth Assembly on May 4 to May 27, 2024.
